Discover the complex and layered history of the California Trail, a vast network of wagon roads and footpaths that brought Americans from the country they knew to the unfamiliar frontier - the greatest mass migration in American history. From the beautiful California coastline to the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains and even to the dry desolate desert, this route will lead you through breathtaking, diverse landscapes. The trail is where you will find the Great Basin National Forest - Home to ancient trees, unique cave formations, 13,000 ft Wheeler Peak, the only glacier in NV and designated an International Dark Sky Park. It is one of the least-visited national parks but in our opinion, one of the most impressive for stargazing, tree hugging and challenging hikes.
Venture through the fantastic California Trail (the greatest mass migration in American history, for gold-seekers and farmers to the goldfields and rich farmlands of the Golden State during the 1840s and 1850s) passing through main states and cities. Visit in Missouri, Kansas City; then, continue to Nebraska, discovering Omaha, Grand Island and Scottsbluff-Chimney Rock (important wildlife habitat and the natural areas in the North Platte River Basin). After that, enjoy Wyoming, with stays in Casper and Jackson. Then, continue to Idaho, spending nice moments in Idaho Falls (hugging the Snake River, the Greenbelt is a system of trails with parks and a waterfall). Continue to your next destination in Utah: Salt Lake City; and in Nevada; The Great Basin (known for its spectacular high elevations and mountain terrain and caves) and Reno (-the biggest little city in the world-, famous for its casinos, and is the birthplace of the gaming corporation, Harrah's Entertainment). Finally, drive to The Golden State and enjoy Sacramento (the capital of California, is known for its evolving contemporary culture, rich history and golden rush past).
