Cork, the 2nd largest city in Ireland, derives its name from the Irish word for marsh - Corcaigh. Saint Finbarr, its patron saint, founded a monastery here around 650 AD, and the Vikings established a colony in the 10th century. It's narrow alleyways, waterways and Georgian architecture give the city a genuine continental feel. In the 19th century, Cork became a base for the National Fenian Movement, and thus gained the title of the Rebel City. Each year it holds the world famous Jazz Festival, a lively weekend attracting jazz enthusiasts and fun seekers from all corners. The city center is perfectly suited to walking with over 30 bridges crossing the two channels of the river.
