    Tulum in Quintana Roo state is known for its Mayan ruins, namely a thriving city populated between 1200 and 1600 CE, which is situated at the edge of a 40-foot cliffside overlooking the Caribbean. The popular local beach, Playa Paraiso, is situated just to the south of the ruins. Tulum is also a popular ecotourism site as it is home to the largest cave system in Mexico (the Sistema Sac Actun, home to many cenotes) and it is the gateway city to Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
