Saumur lies on a lovely stretch of the western Loire valley between Tours and Angers before the mighty river flows into the Atlantic at Nantes. It’s a fabulous area known for its unique troglodyte dwellings dug in tufa and chalk, excellent sparkling wine, and the town is famously home to the National Cavalry School and is one of the main locations of horseback riding in France. The city hosts numerous equestrian events throughout the year with opportunities to meet the famou horsemen of the Cadre Noire.
